Quick Brew Review: Franz Ferdinand "Tonight: Franz Ferdinand"

 Franz Ferdinand
 Tonight: Franz Ferdinand

I've always associated Franz Ferdinand and the Kaiser Chiefs in my mind. They both came out of the UK circa 2005 with strong debut albums of post punk rock. They both are named after WWI era figures. They played together on their first tour. And they had weak sophomore releases. But, their latest efforts end that. Where KC delivered a strong mature CD, it seems Franz is still playing with their sound. This time out they add more snyth and dance rhythms, which sounds good on paper. "Lucid Dreams" in its early digital release had some teeth, but the album version gums it up with a 4 minute snyth interlude. The Russian Polyvox gets in the way of a number of songs, including the single "Ulysses". Maybe they should have rehashed the 2nd album title, You Could Have It So Much Better Part II.
