Quick Brew Review: Handsome Furs "Face Control"

Handsome Furs
Face Control

Don't call them a Wolf Parade side project any longer. Dan Boeckner and wife Alexei Perry showcase their considerable talents and chemistry on their second release. The couple was inspired after touring clubs around Eastern Europe to recreate the beat and and incorporate much of the culture; Hotel Arbat is located in Moscow, "Nyet Spasiba" means "no, thank you" in Russian, and "Radio Kalininbrad" is based on an Eastern Bloc underground radio station. Boeckner amps up his distorted guitar work on standout tracks like "I'm Confused" and "Talking Hotel Arbat Blues". Perry confidently punctuates the songs with drum machine beats, cracks, and pops, while layering on some nice keyboard touches. This is much more upbeat than their debut Plague Park, which was good but somewhat heavy. After last year's medicore WP release At Mount Zoomer, you might call this the true successor to Apologies to the Queen Mary
