Quick Brew Review: Bishop Allen "Grrr..."

Bishop Allen
Grrr...

Lions, tigers, and bears, oh my. Well, maybe not bears, but we've got a circus here from the cover art to the songs; "The Lion & The Teacup", "Cue The Elephants""The Magpie","Tiger, Tiger". I didn't realize Bishop Allen was making a kids album? Perhaps not intentionally, but silly lines like"Olly olly oxen, can you see me?"  ("Dimmer") or"You've got eyes like Oklahoma" ("Oklahoma"will appeal more to the wee ones while adults cringe. Songsmiths Justin Rice and Christain Rudder have always been cutesy, but they generally balanced it with wit and pop sensibility. On my favorite track on 2003's Charm School, a troubled narrator received profound advice from Jesus Christ himself saying, "Things Are What You Make Of Them". 2007's The Broken String had two instantly likable songs, "Rain", the best song ever to outro on a toy piano, and "Click, Click, Click, Click", which was featured on a camera TV ad. This new material is so artificially sweet it leaves a saccharine aftertaste. Grrr...stop clowning around, guys!
