Quick Brew Review: Various Artists "Dark Was The Night"

Various Artists
Dark Was The Night

This was a project sponsored by the Red Hot Organization, a charity for HIV awareness, and spearheaded by The National's Aaron and Bryce Dessner. They collected a who's who of Indie artists for this 2 CD compiliation: Sufjan Stevens, Feist, Ben Gibbard (DCFC), Bon Iver, The New Pornographers, Spoon, Conor Oberst, The Decemberists, Iron & Wine, Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird, My Morning Jacket, and David Sitek (TVOTR) among others. It's a fantastic list of performers and a great cause. Unfortunately, many of the songs here are uninspired covers, which is surprising given these artists generally have an interesting take on a cover. The National's cover of Pavement's "So Far Around The Bend" is one of the exceptions, easily up to par. Feist and Ben Gibbard team up for a good cover of Vashti Bunyan's "Train Song", but it's on the slow side. That's the main problem here. So much of the material is downbeat that two CD's worth of it makes for a long, tedious listen.
