Quick Brew Review: Silversun Pickups "Swoon"

Silversun Pickups
Swoon

It's not surprising most people reference the Smashing Pumpkins when describing this band. The singer sounds quite a bit like Billy Corgan, they have a female bassist who harmonizes, and even the same band initials. But more than anything else, it's that Pumpkins' blaring guitar rock the Pickups emulate. The only real difference is their geography. The Pumpkins were windy city Chicago kids while the Pickups are from sunny LA. Maybe, that explains a lot. The Pumpkins were loud and angrier than a Cubs fan in September. The Pickups are smoother and less menacing. This album is even more homogenized than their rawer debut Carnavas, which, at least,  had one stellar track in "Lazy Eye". Here, not even the highlight "Panic Switch" is all that memorable.
