Quick Brew Review: St. Vincent "Actor"

St. Vincent
Actor

This had the earmarks (and hype) of a breakthrough for Annie Clark aka St. Vincent after the critical acclaim of her 2007 debut Marry Me. We were on board after the single "Actor Out Of Work" dropped. After several album spins, we certainly give props to Clark for a beautiful voice and lush orchestrated production (sounding all Sufjan Stevens protégé). Other highlights are the multi-layered "Save Me From What I Want"  and Feistish "The Party". But much of it lacks real appeal or much optimism. Some songs suffer from long tedious outros (eg. "Black Rainbow" at almost 1:30, "Just The Same But Brand New" at 2:30). Most arrangements sound like a Disney mix, if Uncle Walt liked acerbic wit and distorted guitars. Overall, it's got good points, but probably not catchy enough for repeat plays.
