Quick Brew Review: Mason Jennings "Blood of Man"

Mason Jennings
Blood of Man
Release Date: 9/15/09

Prolific Minnesota songwriter leans on his electric guitar more than usual here while recalling tales from his childhood. As usual, Jennings warm and engaging style is apparent, although his albums have their "hits" and misses. The chuggy suicide tale Pittsburgh and jangely America sounding Lonely Road are the highlights, although they're not quite up to par with Fighter Girl and Soldier Boy from last year's In The Ever. Rockers City of Ghosts and The Field are solid tracks, while the single Sunlight's downbeat chord bridge feels out of place on such a sweet song. While we can't fully recommend this one, if Jennings ever releases a "hits" compilation, be sure and get it.
