Quick Brew Review: Girls "Album"

Girls
Album
Release Date: September 22, 2009
Label: True Panther Sounds
First of all, there isn't a girl in the band. Girls is fronted by the San Fran based duo of Christopher Owens and Chet "JR" White who write most of their songs about girls. When the summer single Lust For Life blew up on the net, we were intrigued to see what the rest of this debut album would sound like. Upon hearing the back story of singer Owens having been raised in a cult called Children of God and admittedly "fucked in the head", it made us a bit suspect, but nothing to worry about. Think of a lo-fi version of the Beach Boys (Big Bad Mother Fucker, Ghostmouth) and Buddy Holly (Laura, Goddamn) wrapped in the warmth of shoegazy guitar and jangly hooks sung by a guy who sounds like a cross between Elvis Costello or Joe Strummer of the Clash. While you can tell there was no real intent to invent anything new here, it's a throughly enjoyable lo-fi mix of past melodies and hooks redefined by some keen craftsmen.
